Independent Living Program

How many of us were ready to be 100% independent as soon as we turned 18?

The reality is that most young adults need a little extra help from their caregivers as they transition into adulthood. Our Independent Living Program (ILP) provides this transition assistance to young adults who have chosen to remain in Georgia's Foster Care system past the age of 18. The purpose of the program is to help residents pursue a college degree, vocational training, or job-skills/career development in the workforce. Open Door Home staff helps them develop skills such as budgeting, scheduling, grocery shopping, homemaking, professional development, and building a support network.

Young adults in ILP do not live in a group home setting. Instead, they learn to maintain their own homes where they may be roommates with other ILP residents.

As of spring 2022, Open Door Home has acquired a new property that we plan to convert into ILP housing. Renovations are currently ongoing at the property.

To be eligible for ILP, youth must fit DFCS requirements and complete an application process. All youth who wish to participate must have graduated from High School or completed a GED program. Youth in the ILP must be enrolled in college or vocational school full or part-time and/or employed full or part-time.
